His mother, not willing to depend on the government or become settle where they lived didn’t want Ben or his brother Curtis to have to grow up living like. His father had left his family because they had soon found out that he was a bigamist, his mother had to start working two jobs to be able and support Ben and his brother Curtis. But one man didn’t choose to be in that same situation, through his will and with the help of his mother and God, Ben Carson became one of the most influential people in my life, having to come from a very poor home same as me, that part really influenced me and opened my eyes because he was poor, much poorer then I was, he lived in a small house or even at his aunt’s house in the ghetto. There are a lot of people in this world that are poor or doesn’t have two parents, but very few people try their best to not have to live in that same situation, they are either too “Comfortable” where they’re at or they are into the wrong groups and end up getting killed or become a drug dealer. He most definitely used every situation that was against him, and used it towards a motivational outcome. But Ben Carson didn’t stop when he was poor or when his father left him to be with another family because he was a bigamist. Gifted hands was truly one of the best books I’ve ever read, it tells so much about a poor kid who just grew up to not settle for just being original or just the same as everybody else, he faced so many odds in his life that to most people would use as an excuse as to why they wouldn’t be able to succeed in their life. I truly recommend this book to every single person in the world honestly, it was such an amazing book and very inspirational to me. In the book Gifted Hands it talks about Ben Carson and his life story and how he came to be one of the best Neurosurgeons. His name would be Benjamin Solomon Carson. This book describes the story of the world renown neurosurgeon and a presidential candidate for the 2016 race who defeated all odds and broke the curse of being a poor black kid in the ghetto and wouldn’t amount to nothing. Poor Black kid who lived in Detroit, moved all the time, Father was a bigamist. It also gives a positive outlook on the importance and value of obtaining quality education. ![]() I would recommend this book to junior readers and young adult who may need help in defining or finding themselves. There is also a bonus at the end of the book. The illustrator shares insight of various stages in Ben's life using family pictures as well as pictures of recognition and achievements. He pursued his education and excelled academically as well as socially to become who we know as the famous Dr. Carson, he eventually found himself becoming more interested in Science. Through all the exposure of music, art, and reading that was given to Dr. We follow Ben through the struggles of poverty, embarrassment and living in a single parent home. However, through the love and support of an awesome mother, she encouraged both of her boys to get a good quality education. Ben Carson did not know that he wanted to become a doctor and was just like many other young kids who did not find school exciting.
